Annise Parker is the 61st mayor of Houston, Texas, serving since 2010. A native of Houston and an alumna of Rice University, Mayor Parker comes from a background in small business and as a software analyst in the oil industry. Prior to being elected mayor, Parker served on Houston City Council and as City Controller, being the city’s first openly LGBT elected official. As mayor, she serves on a number of committees and boards such as the Houston Holocaust Museum and Trees for Houston. Her historical preservation efforts have earned her the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance’s Good Brick Award, and she has focused her efforts as mayor on making Houston a highly competitive city in a dearth of state-level funding.
This week, Michael Deheeger speaks with Houston Mayor Annise Parker about how her city is leading the charge toward innovative urban policy solutions.
